Slovenski Camps

Learning Through Play

The Tyro Robotics Camp is a great way to begin learning about robotics, programming, and engineering. Camp is primarily intended as an introduction for those with 0 - 2 years experience with robotics. We use the LEGO Robotic sets, which have a shallow learning curve and the familiarity of legos, but are also capable of advanced challenges. The main structure of the camp operates around a different challenge each day. Campers work mostly independently on the challenge, learning by trial and error and figuring it out. There is also free building time when campers can design on their own.

Counselors supervise the hands on sessions, providing guidance, tips, and hints. The approach is meant to be discovery based, so campers can carry out their attempts, see the results, and iterate with improvements. Coaching will be intentionally light. The goal is to create a deeper understanding and a love of robotics. Much of the work will feel like play to the campers, as they build, program, and test their ideas.

Every morning, campers have 2 periods working on robotics plus one period with non-robotics activity options, such as dodgeball, swimming, battle rockets, arts & crafts, and badminton. Each of those activity periods has about 8-10 options, rotating through over 50 different games throughout the week. The afternoons are similar, with one activity period of non-robotics, one cabin activity period, and a double period of robotics. The evening activity is another non-robotics activity where all the camp programs come together for options like capture the flag, manhunt, and war games, besides some relaxing options like campfire games, kayak trips, or nature walks. The activity periods are mostly 45 - 60 minutes long. Depending on the day, the robotics time is between 3 and 4 hours per day. The schedule often changes around to suit the weather better.

Slovenski camps is a coed campground. Girls' cabins are separate from boys' cabins, but most activities, free time, and meals are coed.
