Slovenski Camps in collaboration with 317 Main Street Community Music Center
(317 Main of Yarmouth, Maine) is offering a unique summer camp experience for
children and young adults ages 8 through 18 years old. Our camp, located on
a beautiful 90 acre peninsula that extends into Panther Pond in Raymond, Maine
(30 minutes north of Portland), offers an opportunity for an overnight camping
experience that will combine traditional outdoor summer recreational activities
with high quality music instruction from professional music instructors.
Campers who would like to learn to play a string instrument (guitar, mandolin, fiddle, string bass) will receive high quality instruction from 317 Main music instructors (www.317mainst.org). Campers will be organized by ability, and will receive group and individual instruction throughout the afternoon and evening. Practice time and recovery periods (for hands and fingers) will be built into each afternoon.
317 Main music instructors are well-versed in many styles and genres of music, and are ready for various levels of ability. They will work with the campers on playing rhythm, learning a melody, successfully playing in groups, jam session ettiquette, and playing in multiple keys.
String instrument instruction will take place at various locations around the camp, but mostly on the deck of the Main Lodge, and on shaded benches by the beach. Instruction is designed to get students started on a lifetime of fun and music through skills that can be used in recreational settings.
Each evening will feature campfire performances by students and instructors. Campfires will also include contests, readings, music, songs, and encouragement for high standards such as hard work, persistence, preparation, and community service.
Each morning, and in between afternoon classes the campers will be able to participate in summer camp recreational activities or summer athletic training led by camp counselors. Recreational activities include kayaking, swimming, dodgeball, and beach volleyball. Athletic training options include soccer, lacrosse, running, jump rope, medicine ball drills, or splitting wood with an axe.
Campers will be closely supervised at night by counselors in the cabin and counselors on patrol between the girls' cabin area and the boys' cabin area and throughout the peninsula.
